Its not like I am a big footy fan (this is possibly my first post on the subject) - but I do love the ol' blues... It is a love tainted with much frustration of late, but today things started to look up - if only because the smirk was wiped off Eddie's face for an instant... I might summon up the willpower to head to a live match before too long - though whether that is in the team's best interests is questionable - the last spate of game attendances on my part corresponded pretty closely with the great decline a couple of years back... But then again, there is nothing like a steaming Four and Twenty while huddled freezing in the rain at Princes Park...

The back of the book says "Hugh Walker held out for a while. Not for him the sterotype of the greedy lawyer. He'd be the defender of the abused, the voice of the poor, the champion of the oppressed. And he was for a time... until Rottman Maughan and Nash dangled the office with the harbour view in front of him....." I say: "a biting, and somewhat scary satire. Amazing dialect... a rousing and interesting read. (****)Jonathan Franzen: The Twenty-Seventh City : A Novel
Some of you may have read my earlier glowing comments on this book - but as I read on I got more and more disappointed (especially in comparison with the Corrections). Despite Franzen's grand ambition, it never really came together in the end. It ultimately felt somewhat pointless and empty. That said, Franzen's prose is excellent, and it won't put me off reading "Strong Motion". (***)
