The Australian: Costello stirs up backlash [March 08, 2004]

This Howard / Costello issue can't help with the Liberals' current momentum issues. One has to feel just a bit sorry for ol' Pete' - it really does seem that he expected Howard to step aside, but the old man just wants to hang on! I am sure that there is a lot of pressure in the party for Howard to stay - many must question whether Costello will be marketable (he seems a bit too smirky for most) in the way that Howard has been.

    Some of you may have read my earlier glowing comments on this book - but as I read on I got more and more disappointed (especially in comparison with the Corrections). Despite Franzen's grand ambition, it never really came together in the end. It ultimately felt somewhat pointless and empty. That said, Franzen's prose is excellent, and it won't put me off reading "Strong Motion". (***)
